【国公立2次対策～英文解釈～】　PART 2(東北大)

前回の名古屋市立大に続いて、今回は東北大の問題です。受験生が陥りやすいところに目をつけた素晴らしい問題です。

では、さっそく考えてみましょう！！

　From the time of Galileo, science made progress ― enormous progress ― largely by ( ア ) these complexities, and focusing on the simple questions, looking to explain why apples fall to the ground, and why the Sun rises in the east. 解説

問1 by (ア：～ing) these complexities, and focusing on the simple questions と等位接続詞のandが結ぶ範囲を決定します。等位接続詞はbutではなくandなので、前後で意味が逆になることはなく、並列されているだけです。「これら複雑性を( ア )」＝「単純な疑問に焦点を当てる」との対比が見えれば、答えは(b)だと気付けるでしょう。

問2 Progress was ( イ　) spectacular, (indeed), [that (by about the middle of the twentieth century) S:all the simple questions V:had been answered]. このように構造がしっかり解釈出来たら、ぐっと答えに気づきやすくなりました。thatの後続はSVとなっているので、that節だと分かります。そしてspectacular(注目に値する)は形容詞であり、indeedは副詞なので括弧でくくって上げると・・・S was ( ) 形容詞 that S V ~. そうです！！so 形容詞 that 構文です。やはり、頭の中で考えるのではなく、実際に括弧で囲むなりして、視覚化するのが気づきを当てる第一歩になるでしょう。

問3 構文解釈が少しやっかいな問題です。細かく最初からみていくと、等位接続詞のandが何と何を結んでいるかは丁寧に括弧で囲んでみましょう！大きな採点基準です。

〇： the discovery of [the structure of DNA ] and [ the way (in which it is copied from generation to generation) ]

×：[ the discovery of the structure of DNA ] and [ the way (in which it is copied from generation to generation) ]

[ DNAの構造 ]と[世代から世代へと複製される方法]の発見。

括弧の範囲決定に注意しないといけません。the discoveryに両方ともが修飾されるかどうかは日本語訳からDNA構造・複製方法の両方ともの発見としないと意味が通じません。日本語訳からしか判断が出来ないので、簡単ではないですが、落ち着いて考えたら出来ます。

さて次のmadeですが、過去分詞はありえませんよね？直後にlife itselfとしっかり目的語が残っているので、ここのmadeは動詞です。次にmake Oなのかmake O Cなのか？そのためにはまた、等位接続詞andの結んでいる範囲を決定しないといけません。意味が通じるか考えて、[ life itself ], and [ evolution ] [生命自体]と[進化]これは前文のandの範囲決定を参考にしても決めることが出来ます。ここまでできたらV:made O:life itself, and evolution, C:seem simple at the molecular levelとmake O C：OをCにさせるという使役動詞の形で解釈すれば、大丈夫です。

解答例

DNA構造とそれが世代から世代へと複製されていく方法が発見されたことで、生命自体や進化が分子的基準では単純に見えるようになった。
