【国公立2次対策～英文解釈～】　PART 1(名古屋市立大)

難関私大や難関国公立大になってくると、単なる知識を問うだけではなく、英文の論理展開を把握した上での問題が出題される。もちろん合否を分ける、ライバル達との差をつける大事な問題である。

「どのように英文を読んでいけば？」「文脈判断と言われても・・」と考えている受験生はぜひ以下の問題から取り組んでほしい。

　Whereas in the 1970s it was commonly said that the world would have too many people, by the 1990s it was fashionable to argue that, for some developed nations, the opposite would soon be true. Soon, the argument went, there would not be enough healthy, young workers to support a weak, gray-haired population.

　Well, (1)maybe not. (2)There’s no question that taking care of the elderly and weak will incur huge costs, stretching already overburdened pension and health-care systems. But with people living longer and continuing to contribute productively to society, we need to reexamine just what we mean by old.

典型的な間違いは「there maybe not be enough healthy, young workers to support a weak, gray-haired population」と省略箇所を設定してしまうパターン。「弱者である高齢者を支える健康で若い労働者が十分でないかもしれない」と上手く省略箇所を前のパラグラフから抜き出してきているが、これでは後続の英文と矛盾してしまう。「But～」の文で「長生きすることが社会に生産的に貢献する」と述べている。高齢者が社会の負担になっているのではなく、貢献すると言っているのに、パラグラフの最初で高齢者を負担扱いする英文で解釈するのは誤読である。正しくは「That maybe not.」「そういうこと(弱者である高齢者を支える健康で若い労働者が十分でないかもしれないということ)ではないのかもしれない」

・「the + (形容詞)」：「(形容詞)な人々」cf. the rich：金持ちの人々

【解答】

問2高齢で身体の弱い人たちの面倒をみるには莫大な費用を負うことになり、それはすでに過度の負担となっている年金や健康保険制度の負担をさらに大きくすることは疑いようもない。
